THE PIONEERS OF BOLGHERI

A winemaking company of pioneers: the second winery to be established in Bolgheri in 1977; the very first to vinify Bolgheri Rosso, to believe in Vermentino and to enhance elevated vineyards; one of the few to maintain Sangiovese in the blend that gives life to Bolgheri Superiore. In 1994, the authors of the regulations that initiated the enological history of the denomination gathered under the centuries-old oak tree of the farmhouse.

AMIDST FORESTS AND THE SEA BREEZE

Between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri, atop a wooded ridge, Grattamacco enjoys an enviable view of the Tuscan coast.

The estate stretches over an area of 80 hectares, of which 34 are planted with vineyards and 5 with olive groves. The remaining area is covered by forests that extend for over 1600 hectares all around. Native grape varieties such as Sangiovese and Vermentino are cultivated, but international grape varieties that have changed the history of Bolgheri are also present: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, planted since the 1980s.

THE MINERAL STRENGTH
OF WHITE CLAYS

Grattamacco rises in an area with one of the most significant concentrations of white clays and flysch along the Bolgheri coast. The clays emerge on the surface, forming a white layer that is visible to the naked eye. This is the result of the evaporation of an ancestral saltwater lake, a remnant of the ocean's retreat.

LESS TECHNOLOGY, MORE TERROIR

Operations are carried out by hand, intervening as little as possible. attention to detail and the wine’s needs guide the choices made, in pursuit of a «pure» and «uncontaminated» style that reflects the authentic bond between wine and its land.
